Shane, by all rights you should be asleep in Japan at the time we have the Monday call but if you're not on the bridge we will also try to cover your thoughtfully suggested edits to the landing page (and content elements).

Hi Jilayne

= Vision and Mission =

The current versions of the Vision and Mission statement are a little lengthy and potentially challenging for new entrants to parse (https://etherpad.wikimedia.org/p/openchain). I have a suggested re-mix based on the criteria here:
https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/smartwork/201004/vision-and-mission-whats-the-difference-and-why-does-it-matter

Our vision is an industry where suppliers have trusted processes to create and share effective Open Source compliance information

Our mission is to describe what processes required to create and share Open Source compliance information between companies by providing open, collaboratively developed guidelines.

= Improved clarity for the landing page =

Regarding the wording for the Etherpad landing page, perhaps adjusted language such as the following would help with on-boarding:

You can review and contribute to our Working Specification draft at any time. This is where suggestions, comments and corrections should be noted to ensure they can be reviewed and considered by all our collaborators:
https://etherpad.wikimedia.org/p/openchain-proposal1

You can review our initial Specification Draft, now frozen and called the Compliance Reference Model, to understand our starting point and how our thinking has evolved over time:
http://etherpad.wikimedia.org/p/openchain

Also, the next thing one read on our landing page is as follows:

Etherpad Link

(where our realtime collaboration takes place)

Working Specification draft: https://etherpad.wikimedia.org/p/openchain-proposal1

Previous versions: Compliance Reference Model - http://etherpad.wikimedia.org/p/openchain OpenChain spec 2015-10-06

I must say - that is confusing even to me! My first thought is - what the heck is a “working specification draft” versus a “compliance reference model” - this needs to be explained, otherwise it may end up looking schizophrenic, especially to a newcomer.

Cheers,

Just making sure this got a response – Kelly sent an agenda for the Monday meeting that includes a discussion of the landing page, that we can read to include Mike’s offer to add a webpage to linuxfoundation.org.  And that can lead to a discussion to refresh on mission/vision per Jilayne’s comment.

Monday’s getting to be a packed agenda!

Hi Dave

Thanks for flagging. I have one minor suggestion.

Line 101 reads:

A written description of a process exists used to identifying, recording and storing Identified Licenses in association with the Supplied Software

Perhaps it could alternatively be phrased as:

A written description exists of a process used to identify, record and store Identified Licenses in association with the Supplied Software

Subject: Re: [OpenChain] Updated Invitation: OpenChain Spec Working session @ Weekly from 11am to 12pm on Wednesday from Wed Feb 24 to Wed Apr 13 (kstewart@...)

In light of the reduced time tomorrow, if folks get the chance to take a couple minutes to quickly scan the proposed edits to Goal 3 (formerly Goal 4), hopefully we can complete the work in the allotted hour.

If we complete the polishing on Goal 3 tomorrow, we’ll be back on schedule!

Thanks,

Dave

Dave Marr

Thanks Sami.  I made the edit and will discuss the point (which I support).  As to the linking concept I tried to capture that using the word “interacts” but let’s discuss whether that was successfully accomplished.  Talk shortly,

Dave

Hi Dave,

I would say associated with the Supplied Software in Shane’s proposed modification below.

For 110 I would change from:

interacting with FOSS under an incompatible license

to the following:

interacts with FOSS or other software under an incompatible license within the Supplied Software

This should then cover interaction within the Supplied Software in case the distribution was part of a bigger package containing proprietary or other open source software which might cause the incompatibility.

Not sure whether it is worth adding the linking FOSS within the Supplied Software to the list of use cases but this is something we normally ask our developers to indicate as part of our process when they raise their requests.

Best regards,

Sami

Regards

Shane
