Follow up to January's OpenChain UK meeting

Finnian Robinson

Dear all

I’m sending round a follow up to January’s OpenChain UK conference on behalf of Andrew:

Thanks to all attendees (remote and in-person) for your contributions to last month’s OpenChain UK meeting. A particular thank you to Steve Kilbane at Analog Devices for generously hosting us (and to the security guard for directing us to the exit!).

I’m looking forward to seeing as many as possible of you at the next meeting, this time kindly hosted by the BBC at their Salford studios in Media City on the 28th of March. Thank you to David Buckhurst and Tom Sadler at the BBC for arranging this. Some quick googling suggests that there are some pretty keenly priced hotels (Such as Travelodge and Premier Inn) in the area, so I will be staying over and hope to be able to invite you all out or a meal in the evening. We’re expecting the meeting itself to start at around 1pm with lunch and the actual meeting starting at 1:45 and running until 3:00. After that, we’re planning some additional activities, including the BBC’s famous “blue room” https://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/internet/entries/03be315d-df39-3e1e-90a1-595c3d931613 and also looking at professional input into how to record brief videos, like that bitesized training sessions suggested by Martin Yagi.

Notes and action points from the meeting are as follows:

1.      Bitesize training

a.      We decided that it would be appropriate to create a sub-group of the OpenChain UK working group to coordinate these video training resources. Thanks Martin for your work on this!

b.      You can join the subgroup and mailing list by emailing the following link:

                                                                        i.uk-wg-sg-bitesize-training+subscribe@...

c.      The link to the groups.io page is as follows:

                                                                        i.uk-wg-sg-bitesize-training@... | Home

2.      Creation of end-to-end compliance reference materials showing how an example real world project can be developed, built and distributed.

a.      We discussed how there is currently a dearth of examples, and how this presents a chance for OpenChain UK to guide the industry in providing concrete examples of compliance materials, and the process used to generate them, rather than “how to” lists with undefined output.

b.      We would need to consider a ‘house style’ for this.

c.      We agreed on the creation of a separate topic on the mailing list for this.

i.You can join the subgroup and mailing list for end-to-end case studies via by emailing the following address:

1.      uk-wg-sg-end-to-end-case-studies+subscribe@...

ii.The link to the groups.io page for this sub-group is as follows:

1.      uk-wg-sg-end-to-end-case-studies@... | Home

d.      Steve Kilbane said he would consider whether a specific product developed by Analog Devices might be an appropriate example for these example compliance materials.

e.      Yogesh Desphpande from ARM demonstrated how they have been working to increase transparency in the compliance process when developing firmware.

Thank you again for an excellent meeting, and it’s great to see the UK Working Group back on track.

All the best

Andrew

Dear Andrew/Finnian, all,

I’m really looking forward to the next meeting, and joining in person again…many thanks to the BBC and David/Tom. I plan to stay ‘overnight’ (well, a few hours as I need to get back to Oxford for a training course the following morning) at the nearby Ibis Budget Manchester Salford Quays.

I hope to manage to prepare some materials in advance. I have joined both sub-group mailing lists….it seems that it should be possible to share files etc via the same system? Do I need special permission to upload?

Best regards,

Martin.
